Fireman’s Fund Insurance Company sponsored a national survey of firefighters that indicates negative economic effect on Arizona fire departments. The survey was taken by 9500 are departments or 30% of our departments in the country including €109 on a fire departments. The survey was called “Supporting Safer Communities: A National Firefighter Survey.” According to the survey the top challenges in Arizona facing fire departments today are:

• Three-quarters of all fire departments believe staffing, recruitment and retention is at least somewhat challenging in the current economic climate.
• Seventy-two percent say insufficient gear is at least somewhat challenging and 74% state old/outdated gear is at least somewhat challenging.
• Fifty-nine percent of departments have had to increase fundraising efforts and/or grant writing because of budget cutbacks.
• Six in ten departments have delayed replacing equipment and three-quarters have delayed purchasing new equipment.
• Forty-three percent of departments do not have adequate training when it comes to hazardous materials incidents.

“When you consider that firefighters are the first responders to nearly every fire, medical emergency, and natural or man-made disaster in our local communities, it is imperative that we have adequate funding to ensure we keep our communities safe,” said Jeff Piechura, Northwest Fire District Fire Chief, and Chairman of the Arizona Fire Services Institute. “This study is extremely valuable for both its depth and scope - one that effectively shows the needs of today’s fire service in communities across the country and particularly here in Arizona.”

The study was conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs based in New York, and was available online for six weeks from mid-February to March 31, 2009 to all career and volunteer firefighters. Not all Arizona findings were grim:

Seventy-five percent of fire departments have adequate extrication equipment needed to safely and quickly remove injured people from a vehicle crash.

Eighty-two percent of departments have at least one thermal imaging camera, considered a critical tool to identify hot spots and locate injured or sleeping persons in a burning building.

My Take: I am very glad that there is somebody out there helping Fireman! Firemen do not get paid enough as it is. Does it still are on the job, feel it is their duty. This makes them honorable men. The same goes for police officers. These two professions are the most underpaid professions in the United States today.

The police and the fire department keep communities alive. In turn, communities should keep police and firefighters happy. It is true that legally neither one of these groups can go on a full, all-out, strike. A full all-out strike is one where nobody is working. Therefore, the only alternative they have is what the police department calls the “blue flu”. It was so named because many police officers uniforms are a dark navy blue. Basically, at least half, if not more, of the working force of either the police or fire department, get sick and cannot come in to work.

Many city governments have started requiring medical proof from employees who are suffering from the “blue flu”. Ironically, almost all of them have the proof. This tells me that the medical profession supports our police departments and our fire departments. If only more of our communities would stand behind these two departments, they would probably have more people working than they do now to save lives.

If you do not have disability insurance and get injured or disabled on the job or off, it can be a very big financial impact. In fact, the cost of not having disability insurance can be 20 times your annual salary. Life Foundation and America’s Health Insurance Plans did a study that stated just that. The study looked at various types of income protection that reduce the financial risks of disability as well as the consequences facing people who cannot work because of a disability or injury.

In the absence of insurance, a majority of Americans would have to make “drastic lifestyle changes” in order to cover the costs associated with disabilities, regardless of whether the disability is short- or long-term. The study found that the financial impact - equal to lost income plus expenses - can be as high as nearly $1 million for a 40-year-old single man earning $50,000 annually who suffers a long-term disability lasting until 65. The costs associated with short-term disabilities also can be significant - equaling one to two times income in some cases for a disability lasting two years.

Those hardest hit by the costs are single individuals who do not have a second income to rely on; lower income people, because added expenses are greater relative to the lost income; and those who suffer longer-term disabilities.

More than a quarter of Americans admit they would have difficulty supporting themselves financially immediately after a disability, while 49% would reach that point within a month, according to Life.

“Our experience tells us that if you become disabled and don’t have disability insurance, you’re going to have a very rough go of it. This study quantifies the impact of a disability so working Americans can get a better understanding of financial difficulties they’ll likely face without proper insurance coverage,” said Marvin H. Feldman, president and CEO of the foundation. “Disability insurance provides a financial safety net that can be counted on to replace lost income if you were suddenly out of work due to illness or injury.”

The study also shows that various sources of disability insurance provide valuable income replacement to help cover the high costs of disability. Private disability insurance plans, such as employer-sponsored or individual coverage, can reduce the cost of a disability by 70% to 80% Individual disability coverage, in combination with employer- or government-sponsored insurance programs, can reduce the financial cost of disability by 80% to 95%.

The study also makes clear that while government-sponsored disability insurance - either through Workers’ Compensation or Social Security - is available to many working Americans, it can be difficult to qualify for. Workers’ Compensation insurance is limited to disabilities that occur on the job, but a vast majority (90%) of injuries happen outside the workplace, and are therefore not covered by Workers’ Compensation programs. During recent years, only about 45% of initial applications for Social Security benefits have been approved, and the average monthly benefit, $1,062, is barely above the poverty level.

“The Social Security Disability Insurance program can be one source of disability income for many Americans, but this is no guarantee that disabled individuals will be eligible for SSDI,” said Karen Ignagni, President and CEO of AHIP. “Working Americans and their families can benefit from the value that private disability income insurance provides.”

According to the study, it is not just the financial stress that can cause problems when a disabled person is overwhelmed by the expense of medical costs. A person’s self-worth and overall happiness can be directly tied to their financial status. That financial status can possibly cause problems with a person’s disability simply because of the stress. This makes it difficult for a person to get back on their feet to any degree.

My Take: Every employer is required by law to provide Worker’s Compensation. However, this does not cover the complete costs if the disability or injury is permanent. It may cover equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers if those are needed permanently and it will give you a percentage of your weekly paycheck as compensation.

I think the best thing anybody should do is ask their employer to offer disability insurance that can be deducted from their paychecks on a weekly or biweekly basis. Depending on the insurance, this should not be too much of a burden financially. A person should think of the benefits they will get if they are injured or disabled permanently and cannot work.

Becoming permanently disabled is not something people anticipate. There is always a possibility of becoming permanently injured or disabled. It could happen on the job, on your way to work, on your way home from work or even in your home.

Many young people today have realized that they need to prepare for retirement now. However, they are not anticipating disability in the future. They need to realize that we live in a 50-50 world. Doctors around the world will tell a new mother to keep active during her pregnancy. The main reason is that it will make delivery much easier on the woman. However, experts now say that it also will benefit a baby. Of course, a new mother might be a little unsure of exercising while she is pregnant because she does not want to harm the baby. A woman’s body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy and it is only natural that women worry. Medical experts now say that a good exercise program is in the best interest of the mother and the child.

“We know that women who exercise during pregnancy have less chance of developing certain conditions like gestational diabetes,” said Dr. Raul Artal, Chairman of Obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health for the Saint Louis University School of Medicine. “Not only that, exercise maintains musculoskeletal fitness. Women can cope with the anatomical and physiological changes of pregnancy better when they’re in good shape. They also tolerate labor better and recover more quickly from delivery.”

The baby also benefits. One study found that when an expectant mother works out, her fetus reaps cardiac benefits in the form of lower fetal heart rates. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that pregnant women do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day most days of the week. First, though, all women should consult a doctor to make sure it is OK.

When choosing what sort of exercise to pursue, a woman should take into account the shape she was in before becoming pregnant, said Dr. Thomas Wang, a family practitioner for Kaiser Permanente in San Diego. “A lot of things depend on the level of fitness they had before,” Wang said. A mom-to-be should pursue activities that will provide a good level of exertion without testing the limits of her body’s current conditioning. If she is just starting a fitness program to improve her health during pregnancy, she should start out slowly and be careful not to overexert herself.

However, there are certain activities that should at least be undertaken with caution, if not avoided altogether. Pregnant women, for instance, should not go scuba diving, as that activity exposes the fetus to a risk of developing decompression sickness, also known as the bends.

Women also should think twice before engaging in activities where the risk of falling is higher, such as gymnastics, horseback riding, downhill skiing and high-intensity racquet sports. In addition, they should avoid contact sports such as ice hockey, soccer and basketball.

“Anything that involves impact or the chance of abdominal trauma, they should try to avoid,” Wang explained.

Exercise that is perfectly safe for expectant mothers includes Kegel exercises, swimming, walking, light dancing and yoga. Riding a stationary bicycle or working out on aerobic gym equipment — elliptical or stair-climbing machines, for instance — is also fairly safe, as long as care is taken to prevent a fall. Most pregnant women also can take part in jogging, running and aerobics, especially if those were exercises they regularly performed before pregnancy.

Pregnant women who are doing weight training should emphasize improving their muscle tone, particularly in the upper body and abdominal area, according to the American Pregnancy Association. They should avoid lifting weights above their heads and performing exercises that strain the lower back muscles.

“There have been some studies that show heavy lifting causes a temporary drop in the baby’s heart rate,” Wang said. “It usually corrects pretty quickly, but they might want to be careful.”

“By and large, if there are no medical complications of pregnancy, women can continue engaging in the same type of activities,” Artal said. “Women should be encouraged to continue living an active lifestyle.”

My Take: I think every pregnant woman should exercise in some way, to some degree. It makes the delivery so much easier and you have to use fewer drugs during the process, which is better for the infant. The baby will also be much healthier once it is born if the mother exercises during the pregnancy.

Think back in history and consider how women handled pregnancy. The average woman worked hard all day long to provide a clean home and clean laundry for her family. Some women worked in the fields helping their husbands bring in crops while pregnant and sometimes gave birth on the field. All of these women, after birth, would get up and go right back to what they were doing during pregnancy and their babies were healthy. What is even stranger is, these women usually went through their pregnancy with very few, if any, doctors visits.

Of course, those women that were well off usually got pampered while they were pregnant. The consequence of this was that there children were not always as healthy when born. As opposed to a farmer’s wife, a woman who was married to a rich man, usually had regular doctors visits during pregnancy.

According to Drew Rosenhaus, agent for Plaxico Burress, not even his potential indictment and the possibility of 15 years in jail is holding the football star back from playing NFL this fall. The case, as it stands, has been adjourned until September 23 and even though Burress may be indicted on a weapons possession charge by then the trial may not begin until 2010. Therefore, Burress, who was released by the Giants in April and is now an unrestricted free agent, is free to immediately resume his NFL career.

“Now that the legal process is on hold, we are hoping to have a deal in place with a team for Plex before training camps start,” Rosenhaus said in a statement released through his Twitter account.

The only roadblock to that is a possible NFL suspension for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy, which NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell can levy even without a conviction or an admission of guilt. Rosenhaus, though, said he does not believe Goodell has the “grounds” to suspend or even fine Burress, especially since he was already punished by the Giants last fall.

“We are … confident that the NFL will not have grounds to discipline Plax until after the adjudication of his case after this season,” Rosenhaus said. “It is important to note that Plax was already suspended 5 games in 08 by the Giants after the incident. Also keep in mind that Plax has not been in violation of the NFL’s Personal Conduct Policy prior to this incident.”

That may not be entirely true. During 2008, police were reportedly called to Burress’ home twice in response to domestic disturbances - incidents which could be viewed as a violation of the personal conduct policy. Also, Goodell doesn’t necessarily have to consider the fact the Giants suspended Burress for five weeks without pay and fined him an additional week’s salary, since those punishments were for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

Rosenhaus has previously said three teams were interested in signing Burress. The Jets are one, and the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are believed to be the others. Late Monday afternoon, Rosenhaus said a fourth team called to express interest in the 6-5 receiver, too.

“I expected the interest level in Plax to heat up after today’s development,” he said. “And it has.”

Training camps open in late July, and Burress’ attorney, Benjamin Brafman, said his client is in “the best shape ever. He’s ready to play. He’s been diligently training and working out.”

My Take: Since he has been charged with a weapons possession charge, I take it he did not have a permit to carry a weapon. I would like to ask just one question, “Why was he carrying a weapon?”. Was he afraid of somebody? Maybe it was afraid that somebody would like to T shirt designs on his T-shirts.

I believe that the only people that should be allowed to carry a weapon are the police and military. Yes, I know the every American has the right to bear arms. However, with the way our society is right now that is just a little bit too dangerous in certain areas of certain cities. Some of these places, people would shoot you just for wearing cool T shirts.

However, seriously, why does he need to carry a weapon? It cannot be just because he is famous or maybe it is. Then again, he is a football player and bigger than most people. I would have to do is tackle them. Why doesn’t he just hire a bodyguard? That would have avoided any kind of problem law, would it not

At the end of May, US health officials are working as fast as they can to learn about the unusual pathogen, H1N1 virus, commonly called the swine flu before the next flu season starts this fall. Right now, the swine flu is riding a roller coaster in various parts of the country. Health officials are also concerned because it is a more virulent and easily transmitted virus strain.

The reason for the urgency: Some past pandemics were preceded by “herald waves” of a flu strain that surfaced at the end of one flu season, only to return with far greater consequences the next flu season.

“We are mindful that pandemics of influenza have sometimes come in waves,” Dr. Anne Schuchat, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s interim deputy director for science and public health program, said during an afternoon news conference. “The very severe 1918 pandemic had a moderate herald wave in the spring and a much more severe second wave in the fall. So that very terrible experience of 1918 is in our minds.”

Some estimates have placed the worldwide death toll from the 1918 outbreak — often referred to as the “Spanish Flu” — as high as 40 million people.

“We are really on a fast track, over the next to eight to 10 weeks, to learn as much as we can as this virus heads to the Southern Hemisphere [where flu season is just beginning] and to strengthen our planning for the surge of illness that we expect to experience here in the fall,” Schuchat added.

Scientists will be looking to see if the H1N1 swine flu virus mutates or becomes resistant to antiviral medications, or is more easily spread among people, she said.

Schuchat said there is no way to tell now if the H1N1 virus will be more virulent when — and if — it returns to the Northern Hemisphere with the approach of winter. “Whether it will dominate among the seasonal flu viruses or whether it will disappear is not predictable right now,” she said.

To date there have been 6,764 confirmed and probable cases of infection in the United States, Schuchat said, adding that most of the cases have been mild and patients have recovered quickly.

The CDC is reporting 11 deaths linked to the swine flu, and all of the victims had underlying health problems before they were infected. Illinois health officials reported the death of a Chicago area man over the weekend.

Canadian officials said Monday that a Toronto man who had swine flu died Saturday, and he also suffered from a chronic medical condition.

The World Health Organization said Tuesday that 46 countries have reported 12,954 cases of H1N1 swine flu infection, including 92 deaths, most of them in Mexico, where the outbreak began.

The CDC said last week that progress was being made toward the development of an H1N1 swine flu vaccine, with two promising candidate viruses for use in such a shot. In addition, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said Friday that the federal government was allocating $1 billion to the search for a swine flu vaccine.

My Take: I am a big believer in taking multivitamins every day and if people would take multivitamins every day, they might have a better chance of not getting the swine flu. It would also help if people would cover their mouths when they sneeze or cough and then wash their hands.

Kids are the worst because they never cover their mouth when they sneeze or cough. Then you have the ones that wipe their runny noses on their sleeve instead of using a Kleenex or kerchief. This is the fault of the parents who do not keep after their children.

Otherwise, I think if people are careful and avoid crowds there should not be a problem. They should definitely avoid anyone wearing a facemask because if they are wearing one they are either sick or they know someone who is. People should also keep in touch with their doctors if they do get the feeling sick. I understand it is a simple blood test to find out if they do have the H1N1 swine flu.

A young teenager, Daniel Hauser, suffering with Hodgkin’s lymphoma is now receiving chemotherapy after a legal fight started by his parents who wanted to treat him with natural or organic methods. His mother was so adamant that she took Daniel and left the state of Minnesota in violation of court order. On May 26, the boy’s parents finally agreed to let him receive chemotherapy for a tumor that is growing in his chest that was caused by Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Rodenberg separately asked both parents if they agreed to let Daniel undergo chemotherapy, and both said yes. “Do you think this is necessary to save his life?” Rodenberg asked a visibly emotional Colleen Hauser during a Tuesday hearing.

“Yes, I do,” she replied.

Later in the hearing, Rodenberg said, “I’m taking you at your word. We’re starting over right now.” Daniel and Colleen returned to Minnesota on Monday after almost a week on the run, during which they traveled to southern California. Authorities believed they may have been heading to Mexico to seek alternative cancer treatment. But instead, the pair contacted an attorney who helped arrange a flight home on a jet chartered by Asgaard Media, a film and TV production company based in Corona, Calif.

Alan Pezzuto, president and CEO of Asgaard Media, said the company has no plans to profit from the Hauser’s story. “It is not a business project, it’s a personal project,” he said.

In exchange for having charges dropped against Colleen Hauser, the family agreed to let an oncologist examine Daniel. Monday’s exam showed a tumor in Daniel’s chest has grown larger than it was when he was first diagnosed with Hodgkin’s in January.

The tumor is “now protruding outside Daniel’s chest wall,” according to the report by Dr. Michael Richards. “There is further compression of the airway, making the initiation of standard chemotherapy imperative this week.”

Doctors have said that because Daniel’s tumor responded well to one round of chemotherapy in February, it’s likely chemotherapy will be successful again. Doctors won’t know for certain until they try another round. If the tumor has become resistant to chemo, a stronger dose or different treatment plan might be needed.

Doctors have also said that starting and stopping chemotherapy, or getting the treatment on a pared-down schedule as the Hausers had proposed, could make a tumor resistant.

James Olson, the Brown County prosecutor, said social workers at Children’s Hospital told him that as recently as Monday the Hausers I were still saying they didn’t want chemotherapy. The family and their lawyers did not say what was behind their apparent change of heart.

The Hausers did not return several phone messages left at their home Tuesday. After the hearing, family attorney Calvin Johnson, and Daniel’s court-appointed attorney Philip Elbert, said no one in the family or the attorneys themselves would speak to the media.

Olson said he was not convinced the family would stick to the treatment plan. “I am concerned that if Danny doesn’t like the second round of chemotherapy he’s going to say, ‘I’m going to run away again,’ and we’re going to be right back where we started,” Olson said. “These folks have had a history of changing their minds.”

My Take: Nothing I have read so far indicates that the parent’s beliefs indicate no medical intervention. What I have read only seems to indicate that they believe in natural healing and that it is not part of their religion. This makes me think this is not a religion vs. law situation.

The Nemenhah Band, is a religious group but the parents do not appear to be members of that group. They just seem to believe in the natural healing practices of this religious group. I would like as the family why they would forgo a process that has a 90% cure rate in children for something that may not even help her son.

With their pictures plastered all over the news, how did Colleen think she was going to get her son across the border? Was she going to wear sexy adult Halloween costume? Maybe she was going to hunt down at Halloween party costume for Daniel. I doubt very much that they could have successfully crossed the border.

Remember back in the 50s when people started dreaming about what the 21st century would bring with those fantastic flying computerized cars and the moving sidewalks. What about all those resorts that were going to be built under the sea? Were you one of the lucky ones in 1964 to get to see the “Futurama” at the New York world’s fair? If you were, you got to see a miniaturized replica of what a 21st century American city would look like.

Forty years later, we are still waiting for those congestion-free highways — along with the jet pack, the paperless office and all those “Star Trek”-like gadgets that were supposed to make 21st-century life so easy.

Daniel Wilson has been waiting as well. He has looked at the future we imagined for ourselves in pulp comic books, old science magazines and cheesy sci-fi movies from the 1950s, and came up with one question.

Why isn’t the future what it used to be?

“I feel entitled to have all this technology that’s been promised at a certain time,” says Wilson, author of “Where’s My Jetpack?” “I look up and say, ‘Where’s all this stuff?’ ”

Some of that futuristic stuff, it turns out, is already here. Visionaries actually invented objects like flying cars, but they could never work out the real world applications, Wilson says. Other inventions had the same problem. Ordinary people did not want to have anything to do with them.

These futuristic follies include everything from “Smell-O-Vision,” an invention that helped moviegoers smell as well as see movies; Sanyo’s “ultrasonic ultra-squeaky clean human washing machine” (it was dubbed the “human washing machine,” but would not fit in an ordinary bathroom) and, of course, the jet pack.

“Scientists are OK at predicting what technology is going to happen in the future,” Wilson says. “They’re really bad at predicting how it’s going to affect us.”

What happened to my jet pack?

The jet pack is a perfect example of predicting the future, Wilson says. He says the jet pack first appeared in 1928 in an Amazing Stories comic book, which featured the hero Buck Rogers zooming though the sky in a jet pack.

The jet pack was actually developed by 1961, Wilson says. An inventor mounted a rocket onto a backpack and called it a rocket belt. A variation of the rocket belt even appeared in the 1965 James Bond movie, “Thunderball.” Today, the jet pack continues to grab inventors’ imaginations.

A daredevil wearing a jet pack flew across a 1,500-foot-wide canyon in Colorado in November. A Swiss pilot, dubbed “Fusion Man,” flew across the English Channel last year using a single jet-propelled wing. And a New Zealand inventor recently invented a jet pack, which weighs about 250 pounds, that reportedly can run for 30 minutes.

The jet pack, though, has never really taken off, Wilson says. The problem is its practical application. While a rocket belt could propel a screaming human to 60 mph in seconds, its fuel lasted for only about half a minute, “which led to more screaming,” Wilson says.

The military could not find a useful application for it either. A soldier with a jet pack might look cool, but he is an easy target. Nor could a jet pack be of use to ordinary people who wanted to avoid rush-hour traffic, Wilson says. Jet-packing hordes could transform the skies into an aerial demolition derby, with air rage and drunk drivers turned into wobbly human torpedoes.

Yet other bold visions of the future have come true. Remember Rosey the Robot? That was the name of the robotic maid that waited on the Jetsons, the popular cartoon family from the future. Rosey has become “Wakamaru.” That’s the name of a 3-foot-tall robot with a goofy grin that the Mitsubishi conglomerate in Japan invented to assist elderly people at home by doing everything from reminding them to take their medicine to looking out for burglars. Wakamaru can recognize faces and up to 10,000 words, Wilson says. “Beam me Up Scotty,” is a tagline from another television show, “Star Trek”. But teleportation has been invented, Wilson says. He says a group of international scientists successfully transported a photon — a bundle of electromagnetic energy — from one side of a room to another in 1993. Physicists routinely conduct teleportation experiments today, Wilson says.

“Teleporting anything, even elementary particles, is mind-blowing,” Wilson says. “Why is it that most people don’t know it exists? It has not been put into practice yet. In real life, it’s always about, ‘What can you do for me?’”

A darker view of technology’s future.

People’s fascination with technology’s imprint on the future did not start, however, in the mid-20th century with shows like “The Jetsons” or “Star Trek.” Joseph Corn, co-author of “Yesterday’s Tomorrows: Past Visions of the American Future,” found an inflated optimism about technology’s impact on the future as far back as the 19th century, when writers like Jules Verne (”Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea”) were creating wondrous versions of the future. Even then, people had a misplaced faith in the power of inventions to make life easier, Corn says.

For example, the typical 19th-century American city was crowded and smelly. The problem was horses. They created traffic jams, filled the streets with their droppings and, when they died, their carcasses. But around the turn of the 20th century, Americans were predicting that another miraculous invention would deliver them from the burden of the horse and hurried urban life — the automobile, Corn says.

There were a lot of predictions associated with early automobiles,” Corn says. “They would help eliminate congestion in the city and the messy, unsanitary streets of the city.” Corn says Americans’ faith in the power of technology to reshape the future is due in part to their history. Americans have never accepted a radical political transformation that would change their future. They prefer technology, not radical politics, to propel social change.

“Technology has been seen by many Americans as a way to get a better tomorrow without having to deal with revolutionary change,” Corn says. Today, however, a more sober view of technology has sneaked into the nation’s popular culture. In dystopian sci-fi films like “Blade Runner,” and “Terminator,” technology creates more problems than it solves.

“Battlestar Galactica,” the recent television series, is a prime example. It depicts a world where human beings have created amazing technology that has brought them to the precipice of extinction. There is no Buck Rogers zooming blissfully through the sky. The show follows the journey of a group of humans who created a race of robots called Cylons a. The Cylons rebel, virtually wipe out humanity with nuclear weapons, and pursue the survivors through space.

Mark Verheiden, a Battlestar writer, says the show’s writers pay attention to current events when plotting their story lines. The contemporary world is filled with the unintended consequences of technology, he says. “There are so many things you can’t anticipate when you create a new technology,” he says. “Who would have predicted that the Internet would be taking down shopping malls and wiping out newspapers?”

In Battlestar’s finale, human beings abandon their faith in technology’s ability to improve the future. They destroy their fancy machines and start again as simple hunter-gatherers. “At some point, you can’t expect a miracle to come in the form of technology to save us,” Verheiden says. “At some point, the miracle has to come from a change in attitude and a new outlook.” That does not mean, however, that Verheiden is not a fan of imagining future technology. He says he grew up watching “Star Trek” and immersing himself in Futurama-like exhibits.

The elevated cities and the “Star Trek” voyages of yesteryear may now seem corny, but at least they show humanity has a future, he says.

” ‘Star Trek’ was saying [that] a thousand years from now, people [will] figure out how to get along,” Verheiden says. “In some ways, sci-fi says that the future is still optimistic, because no matter how bleak things are, it suggests that we’re still here.”

My Take: There is a saying in the sci-fi world, “Yesterday’s science fiction is today’s science.” There is more truth in poetry in phrase. “Star Trek” is a perfect example of that phrase. Many things that were imagined on the show are now a reality. Some of those things are from the sick bay on the Enterprise like that fabulous medical bed that told Dr. McCoy what was wrong with his patients. There is now a bed very similar to that in existence called the “Life Bed”.

Much of the science fiction that is now science is in existence; however, our society is not ready for any of it. Science moves faster than society does. This article mentions the flying car and the jet pack. Our society is nowhere near ready for them, maybe in another hundred years. When we get our heads screwed on right and have learned not to drink and drive. On the other hand, maybe they could use some of that technology from science fiction to determine if a person’s blood alcohol is too high to drive by just touching the car door.

The people of yesteryear who were waiting for the paperless office can see it already. With computer technology the way it is right now, a business could conceivably have the paperless office. However, people like to be able to hold something in their hands and read it, we are almost there with iPods, cell phones, and other gadgets that allow us to hold in our hand what would normally be printed on paper.
