Chapter 6

After arriving in London, Morgan finds Naomi surrounded by reporters as she tries to leave Scotland Yard, having just been questioned by the police. Morgan offers Naomi his help, and uses his authority as an Adversary to force the reporters to honor Naomi's request for privacy and let her go. He then demands privacy for himself, backing his demand with a drawn sword as he enters Scotland Yard for questioning.

Chapter 7

Alan Thistlewood and Gregory Windsor, inspectors for the London Metropolitan Police, have left Morgan in Windsor's office while they argue over the results of their interrogation of Morgan Stormrider. Even though Morgan has not contradicted himself or the information provided by Naomi, Thistlewood insists that Morgan killed Christabel Crowley, focusing on the fact that Morgan would stand to gain from Christabel's death. Morgan reveals that Thistlewood has a long-standing grudge against him to Windsor, and explains somewhat of how candidates for the post of Adversary are chosen by the Phoenix Council. Windsor, convinced that the evidence does not point to Morgan, informs Morgan that he is no longer a suspect in Christabel's murder.

Chapter 8

Isaac Magnin, one of the five members of the Phoenix Society's Executive Council, has paid a visit to Karen Del Rio of the Phoenix Society's New York Chapter. Having given Del Rio a dose of her favorite drug, Magnin begins to ask her questions concerning Morgan Stormrider. Morgan is of interest to Isaac Magnin, for the New York chapter of the Phoenix Society has been able to use Morgan for ten years despite an attitude towards authority on Morgan's part that should make him completely unsuited for use as an Adversary.

Chapter 9

Dr. Josefine Malmgren of the Asgard Technological Development Corporation has spent the last five years working on her latest project, the Asura. The Asura is an anthromorphic body designed to house existing AIs, and its development is a philanthropic effort funded personally by Isaac Magnin, who owns and runs the AsgarTech Corporation. Dr. Malmgren is satisfied that the Asura OS works correctly, having run thousands of tests in a virtual machine. Ignoring her instructions, she installs the Asura OS into the Asura prototype, which is code-named 'Polaris' and bears the designation 'AES-200//000'. Polaris activates, and Dr. Malmgren is able to interact with him before collapsing from exhaustion caused by lack of sleep.

Chapter 10

Polaris tends to Dr. Malmgren, and attempts to leave the room in which he was activated. Finding that the exit is locked, Polaris attempts to force his way, which amuses the artificial cat set to watch over Dr. Malmgren. Isaac Magnin arrives at the cat's summons, and explains to Polaris that Dr. Malmgren was temporarily incapacited with a tranqulizer by the cat on his orders; Magnin did not want any of his staff to activate the Asura. Concerned that Magnin would de-activate him, Polaris attempts to attack Magnin, only to find himself suspended in mid-air. Magnin then throws Polaris across the room without touching him, and explains how he knew that Polaris would attack. Magnin says that he will not de-activate Polaris, and invites Polaris to follow him.
