New Jersey Road Fatalities Down 17.5 Percent
According to recent reports from the New Jersey State Police, there has been a significant decline in the number of fatalities on New Jersey roads and highways, and drivers’ safety courses may have something to do with the downward trend.
While they are not certain more divers are applying skills and knowledge learned in a New Jersey driver safety education course, or simply being more cautious, the decline is remarkable: “Deaths on New Jersey roads and highways last year plummeted to their lowest level in more than three decades,” writes Rudy Larni, a reporter with the Star-Ledger. In his article, Larni sites police records which state that there were 597 traffic deaths last year, 17.5 percent below the 724 in 2007. The previous low of 723 was recorded in 2000 and 2004. He writes that the “dramatic decrease” was attributed in part to “stepped up enforcement of traffic laws and enhanced safe-driving education efforts.”
In addition to a ramp up in drivers’ ed safety course enrollment numbers, the report also suggests that the drop could be due in small part to the fact that, with gasoline prices so high in late summer of 2008, that fewer drivers on the roads resulted in fewer auto-involved fatalities.
Unfortunately, the news preceded by only a few days a seven-car accident on Jan. 12 on Route 78 in Union County that killed two people. That crash, however, was caused by an overturned dumptruck, so perhaps it doesn’t count. For more about it, visit http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2009/01/jackknifedtractortrailer_accid.html.
