SC’s Strange Candidate Indicted on Obscenity Charges

A South Carolina grand jury indicted surprise U.S. Senate candidate Alvin Greene on Friday, August 13, on two charges, including a felony charge of showing pornography to a South Carolina college student.

Greene, an unknown who shocked the Democratic establishment by winning the state’s primary, was indicted for allegedly disseminating, procuring or promoting obscenity, a felony, and a misdemeanor charge of communicating obscene materials to a person without consent.

Greene told FoxNews.com on August 13 that “my lawyer’s dealing with it,” before hanging up. When contacted again for his lawyer’s name, Greene said, “It doesn’t matter.”

Greene was arrested in November after authorities say he approached a student in a University of South Carolina computer lab, showed her obscene photos online and then talked about going to her dorm room. Greene has not entered a plea and has refused to talk about the accusations in interviews.

Greene, 32, won a shocking victory in the June 8 Democratic primary. Greene’s accidental candidacy—in a state that has cornered the market in bizarre political theater—has made for a compelling spectacle. His disjointed responses to questions have become YouTube sensations. Yet as state Rep. Todd Rutherford puts it, “If this is a joke, he doesn’t get it, so it’s not funny.” State Democrats are struggling to figure out what to do about him. They recently voted to uphold his nomination, reasoning that he appeared to have won the Democratic primary legitimately capturing 59% of the ballots. The unemployed military veteran handily defeated Vic Rawl, a former lawmaker and judge who had been considered an easy win by the party establishment.

But now they’re saddled with a candidate who’s facing multiple legal predicaments. There’s the obscenity case, which Greene refuses to discuss (he hasn’t entered a plea and no trial date has been set; his public defender didn’t return a call for comment). A watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), has filed a complaint [PDF] with the Federal Election Commission, arguing that Greene failed to file necessary forms to run (the FEC says it’s investigating). And the State Law Enforcement Division in South Carolina is probing whether Greene lied on his affidavit of indigency, according to someone with knowledge of the inquiry who’s unauthorized to discuss it, a SLED spokesperson declined to comment.

Off-Topic Breach: There is an online vendor that offers a full selection of custom tablecloths from 60 wide to over 132 inches wide. They also offer custom shaped tablecloths and linens as well as table skirts and napkins. In fact they specialize in fine table linens, oversized tablecloths, linen/standard/custom runners as well as cloth napkins. Whether there is a specific location or you just are in the market for a new tablecloth, this is the vendor you want to visit online.

All of this havoc has prompted many state Democrats to suspect a dark conspiracy at work to help Republican Sen. Jim DeMint get reelected. “I don’t know if he was a Republican plant,” said U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn after Greene’s victory. “He was someone’s plant.” Such shenanigans have occurred before in South Carolina. In 1990, a GOP operative paid the filing fee for an unemployed black shrimper to run in the Republican primary, hoping his presence would boost white turnout. If Greene’s candidacy were the work of a dirty trickster, it would surprise almost no one. Yet in South Carolina political circles, another possibility appears to be gaining currency: that this was entirely Greene’s doing. “I think he did it on a lark,” says state Senate minority leader John Land, who lives in the same county.

Up to that point, Greene had done no visible campaigning and had no website, fundraising or staff. In the months since, Greene has given a series of awkward interviews to reporters clamoring for more information on the unemployed man who lives in Manning with his ailing father. In one interview, he suggested that the state’s economy could be improved by making and selling action figures depicting him in his uniform.

Last month, Greene gave his first public speech, a 6 1/2-minute recitation of his previous comments and commitment to jobs and education. He now has a website and says he has raised less than $1,000.

Green now faces Republican US Senator Jim DeMint in the fall election, a popular incumbent who has raised more than $3 million for his campaign.

My Take: This is just plain weird. Maybe somebody should call a California lemon law attorney because this guy seems like he’s busted in the head. Yes, I know that CA lemon law lawyers only handle cases of products that cause damage because of workmanship or something to that effect. But this guy really is off his rocker.

As far as I can tell he doesn’t seem to be married so he’s not gonna be in need of an Austin TX divorce lawyer. I can’t see why anyone would want to marry him anyway. If one did marry him it would not take her long to hire an Austin divorce law attorney.

Air Cargo Security

Advancements in Flame Resistant Clothing

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Some fantastic things are happening in the advancement of flame resistant clothing. According to Science Daily in July 2008, protective clothing worn by firefighters and other emergency workers may soon get a germ-fighting upgrade. Researchers in South Dakota reported progress toward the first Kevlar fabrics that can kill a wide range of infectious agents, including bacteria, viruses, and the spores that cause anthrax. The researchers also said that the coating is long lasting, can be reactivated and will not cause any loss of fabric comfort or strength.

At Texas A&M, a Dr. Jaime Grunlan has developed a thin film composite coating of polymer and clay that three-dimensionally lines the walls of a foam object and renders it flame resistant. Where fabric is concerned, each thread can be individually coated with a flame retardant clay-filled thin film and remains soft and flexible.

And down under in Melbourne, Kiwi scientists have developed a revolutionary new fabric, which is not only flame resistant but is stab resistant as well and is as light as wool. According to Dr. Ingram of AgResearch, the new fabric is tough enough to withstand a blowtorch as well as other commercial applications. This new fabric is not only flame resistant but may also help protect soldiers from flying shrapnel.

This means that Carhartt will be getting new material to make its Carhartt coats out of as well as its various other flame resistant work wear. It also means that firefighters and other emergency workers will be safer when doing their jobs protecting us.

OSHA Guidelines On Flame Resistant Clothing

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

Heat, fire, combustible dust related explosions can all cause severe burn injuries and fatalities for workers in the construction, electrical and related fields, as well as firemen and other emergency crews.

That’s why it’s so important that these workers and others who may be exposed to these hazards wear some form of protective work wear, including flame resistant clothing, also known as FRC.

There are many companies out there catering to the needs of these workers by offering a wide supply of clothing designed for men and women, including Carhartt coats, waterproof overalls, high visibility vests and outerwear and hats, gloves and flame-resistant accessories.

But all the best gear in the world won’t cut it when it comes to protecting the crew if management doesn’t enforce standards for properly protecting their workers.  You might want to take a few tips from  David Osbon, product manager at Unifirst uniforms and services.  He’s put together a pretty thorough podcast on the importance of wearing FRCs, particularly when it comes to handling combustible particulate solids that generate combustible dust.

In his podcast, Osbon contends that many manufacturing facility managers are not aware of the fire hazard from combustible dust explosions and that in many of these instances, when vapors carry the potential for flash fires and explosions, that wearing FRC is actually a requirement by OSHA.   In fact, the  OSHA general duty clause requires that employers provide FRC’s to all employees when a hazard is potentially present from combustible dust related fires and explosions. Furthermore the OSHA Dust NEP states:

Visit the site and listen to the podcast for much more information about OSHA and FRCs.  If you’re in the market for your own FRCs, or for heavy duty outerwear, try any retailer offering products from the Carhartt line.  These folks have been in the business of providing top-quality workwear, including FRCs, for many years.
